What is Developmental Coordination Disorder?

Developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD), also known as dyspraxia, is a condition affecting physical co-ordination. It causes a child to perform less well than expected in daily activities for their age, and appear to move clumsily. (NHS England, 2023)

What is included in the Assessment?

Our DCD assessment provides everything you need to help your child overcome their challenges and reach their full potential. The assessment will include the Movement ABC - 3 Checklist to be completed by parent or a teacher that knows the child well. We will complete a full face to face assessment with your child including a motor assessment using the Movement ABC-3 and Handwriting assessment. Following the assessment you will receive a full report which can lead to a diagnosis if your child meets a set criteria from the DSM 5. For a full diagnosis your child will need to see a paediatrician which can support with.

*Please note that standardised assessments are not always appropriate or essential for every case. When you contact Therapy Bus LTD we will arrange a call to ensure you are offered the correct package using the assessment tools suitable for your child.

What will be covered in the assessment?

The Assessment will start prior to your appointment where you will be asked to complete our pre-assessment questionnaire and the Movement ABC-3 Checklist.  The Movement ABC Checklist is a tool used to identify potential motor coordination difficulties in children and young adults aged 3-25. This can be completed by either a parent or someone that knows the child well like a teacher, SENCO, TA or therapist.

A really important question we ask is for you to identify up to three functional goals you would like the child to achieve. This will help our therapist tailor the recommendations around your child's interests and goals.

At the face to face assessment your child will be asked to complete a number of tasks as part of the Movement ABC- 3. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children (Movement ABC) is a standardised assessment tool used to identify motor difficulties in children and young adults. It assesses both gross and fine motor skills across various age ranges, from 3 to 25 years old.

Our Assessment may include. We will also use clinical observation and ask your child to perform a number of non-standardised tasks to assess performance in areas the Movement ABC misses. This will include looking at handwriting if flagged as a concern and may include an additional standardised assessment if applicable.

Please note that due to the physical nature of the tasks performed we ask for children to wear appropriate footwear and clothing. Trainers and Sports wear is recommended for the assessment.

Where will the assessment take place?

Our DCD Motor Sensory Clinic takes place every Tuesday at the Marlowe Innovation Centre in Ramsgate. We can also do this assessment in schools or your home if the environment is big enough. The assessment room should measure at least 6 m × 4 m and have a smooth, white wall. Part of the floor surface should be relatively hard and smooth, and the space should also be equipped with at least one table and two chairs to adequately perform manual dexterity tasks.

What will the report include?

Our detailed report will include a full break down of how the child performed in the Movement ABC- 3. This will include percentile scores and an explanation of how the child performed in comparison to other children of the same age. We will breakdown the DSM V criteria for Developmental Coordination Disorder and comment whether the Child meets Criteria A-C. If the child does meet this criteria it will be our recommendation for a paediatrician to consider Criteria D and conclude the assessment. Therapy Bus LTD is happy to assist in finding a reputable Paediatrician.  â€‹

Most importantly we will provide recommendations to support the child with the challenges they face.

Clients outside this radius will be charged an additional 45p per road mile to help with our travel costs. We will happily send you a quote on request.
